Farrah and Michael....

MAY 1977: it's the last day of school at Wilson Elementary in Davenport, Iowa. Mrs. Davis, my sixth grade teacher, is reaching into a box full of names and pulls out a piece of paper. She clears her throat and reads "Darrin Carson".

My name. I couldn't freakin' believe it. I never win anything.

The prize? The now famous Farrah Fawcett poster (above). What I remember most about that poster is the "nipple" (again...above).

What I also remember most is that I knew my parents were NEVER gonna let me hang that poster in my room. It was considered racy back then. Especially for a 12 year old Christian boy. I was right. I never got to hang it up in my room. Oddly enough, a poster of Farrah's then husband Lee Majors as the "Six Million Dollar man" adorned my wall instead. I was a huge fan of that show.

That memory came to mind immediately when I heard that Farrah Fawcett had passed away after her 3 year battle with cancer this morning. I feel fortunate to have come of age during her era. She was so stunningly beautiful. Just seeing that poster brings back that silly memory. Cracks me up every time I think about it.

FAST FORWARD TO SEPTEMBER 1983: What I enjoyed most about Michael Jackson? Those videos. Before Michael, we had cheap Flock Of Seagulls videos with lots of aluminum foil and bad special effects. I can clearly recall when "Thriller" debuted on MTV, it was like a film premiere. Directed by John Landis, no less. It wasn't just a video. It was mini-movie. Why, even the video of the "making" of the THRILLER video sold in the millions. Those videos were EVENTS.

When it was finally confirmed that he died, I didn't think first of a video. Instead I thought about the time when Michael Jackson seemed to defy the laws of physics when he demonstrated the "moonwalk" on the 25th Anniversary Motown Special from 1983.

I notice tonight MTV is actually playing his videos. That's quite a tribute to his far reaching influence on music.

Thanks for the memories, Farrah and Michael.

PS: hey NICK AT NIGHT? Where's the non-stop Charlie's Angel's marathon?

Time for ice cream.

The Big 20

Vanessa and I make 20 years together today. Can't believe it. TWENTY YEARS. Time flies by too fast. Up above is the video from our wedding, shot by my brother-in-law. It's late eighties video technology so it's kinda bumpy. We were married live on the radio at the Mo'oheau Bandstand in downtown Hilo on June 15th, 1989.

Happy anniversary, babe... Love you,

Lazy sunday...

I just don't keep up with the blog like I should. I'm so micro-blog centric (twitter, facebook, myspace) that I don't think I can form a full paragraph anymore. At least one longer that 140 characters.

Have a great weekend. Tomorrow is Vanessa and I's 20th anniversary! Wow. Twenty years. Where'd they go? Twenty years, I don't know. (Thank you, Bob Seger)

Vog from Space....

Sounds like a SCI-FI movie, huh? VOG FROM SPACE!

This photo is taken from NASA'S "Image of the Day". "Vog" is the volcanic smog caused by the Sulfur dioxide emissions from Halemaʻumaʻu vent. Here's the text from the website itself..

"This image, taken by the crew of Space Shuttle Atlantis (after completing the capture of the Hubble Space Telescope), shows volcanic plumes from Kilauea rising up from three locations: Halema‘uma‘u Crater, Pu‘u ‘O‘o Crater, and from along the coastline where lava flows from the East Rift zone were entering the ocean."

Check it out! Here's a link to the site. VOG FROM SPACE

Today is Tuesday. Not Monday

These 4 day weeks get me every time. Even though I worked yesterday Memorial Day, I'm still referring to today as Monday. Today is Tuesday. TUESDAY.

I figure if I blog about it then it'll settle in. Maybe.

TUESDAY. That should do it.

Happy Memorial Day!

Doing my show this morning ("live" as opposed to "memorex") and wishing you and yours a Happy Memorial Day. Thinking a lot about our deployed and women today and the sacrifices made so that we can be free. Freedom is such a privelege and very humbling when you think of the sacrifices made so that we can do just that. Live free.

Thank a veteran. I know it's not Veteran's Day but tell them how much you appreciate what they've done. Tell a service-person how much you appreciate them.

Okay..back to my show. Blogging during my show. Tsk!

Aloha...

Pain in the....

Oy. I threw my back out yesterday. The weird thing about pulling your back out is that it's usually for doing the most mundane thing. I would like to say I pulled my back out while doing something manly like hanging sheet rock while building my a den in my house. Or leaping heroically in front of a car to push an innocent bystander out of the way of an out of control car.

No, I threw my back out reaching down for a sponge. I was doing some house cleaning yesterday and I reached down to get a sponge to clean the bathroom. (Yes, my wife has me trained well) That was it. Now I'm walking around like Redd Foxx in Sanford and Son.

Getting back to heroic: not only did I finish cleaning said bathroom but I also vacuumed the entire house.

I guess that's manly enough for me.

Finally saw Star Trek

Last night Vanessa and I saw Star Trek. While I knew I'd like it (I haven't heard a single bad review) I was still blown away. So many little treats for the longtime Star Trek fan. While I knew Zachary Quinto was dead ringer for Spock, I was even more impressed with Karl Urban's portrayal of Dr. McCoy. He not only looked like "Bones" he acted like him. (Along with the obligatory "Dammit Jim" line) Simon Pegg's Scotty was great too, my only complaint is that he came in too late in the movie.

Spock and Uhura? (spoiler) I liked the "thing" they had going. My theory is that daddy had a thing for "earth girls" and apparently so does Spock. (After all, aren't "Earth Girls Easy"? Sorry, couldn't resist.)

Gonna be hard to top that one this summer, although watching the trailers, we have a big summer of big movies. Can't wait..

Have a great weekend,
