MAY 1977: it's the last day of school at Wilson Elementary in Davenport, Iowa. Mrs. Davis, my sixth grade teacher, is reaching into a box full of names and pulls out a piece of paper. She clears her throat and reads "Darrin Carson".
My name. I couldn't freakin' believe it. I never win anything.
The prize? The now famous Farrah Fawcett poster (above). What I remember most about that poster is the "nipple" (again...above).
What I also remember most is that I knew my parents were NEVER gonna let me hang that poster in my room. It was considered racy back then. Especially for a 12 year old Christian boy. I was right. I never got to hang it up in my room. Oddly enough, a poster of Farrah's then husband Lee Majors as the "Six Million Dollar man" adorned my wall instead. I was a huge fan of that show.
That memory came to mind immediately when I heard that Farrah Fawcett had passed away after her 3 year battle with cancer this morning. I feel fortunate to have come of age during her era. She was so stunningly beautiful. Just seeing that poster brings back that silly memory. Cracks me up every time I think about it.
FAST FORWARD TO SEPTEMBER 1983: What I enjoyed most about Michael Jackson? Those videos. Before Michael, we had cheap Flock Of Seagulls videos with lots of aluminum foil and bad special effects. I can clearly recall when "Thriller" debuted on MTV, it was like a film premiere. Directed by John Landis, no less. It wasn't just a video. It was mini-movie. Why, even the video of the "making" of the THRILLER video sold in the millions. Those videos were EVENTS.
When it was finally confirmed that he died, I didn't think first of a video. Instead I thought about the time when Michael Jackson seemed to defy the laws of physics when he demonstrated the "moonwalk" on the 25th Anniversary Motown Special from 1983.
I notice tonight MTV is actually playing his videos. That's quite a tribute to his far reaching influence on music.
Thanks for the memories, Farrah and Michael.
PS: hey NICK AT NIGHT? Where's the non-stop Charlie's Angel's marathon?
Time for ice cream.
